Wildflowers in 2013

As we start this new year, we hope that all our recent rain will bring an abundance of wildflowers this spring in contrast to last year's poor turnout.

Newcomer Wildflowers First Two Weeks of April 2011

Despite our topsy-turvey weather this spring; cold storms bringing rain, snow, sleet, and gusting winds to our scenic central coast spot on the map, determined new-blooming wildflowers insist on raising their slender stems above the soaking soil to bring us the beauty of their flowers.

Some of these newly appearing flowers are so small that photographing them is quite a challenge. Some flower-heads are barely 1/4 of an inch in diameter !

This posting's flowers include: tidytips, bellardia, bur chervil, splendid mariposa lily, blue scarlet pimpernel, and coast lotus to mention only a few.

New Wildflowers March 25 2011

Despite brisk winds and flooding in many areas from this past week's soaking rainfall, wildflowers continue to grow and stick their heads up, bringing some much needed color to our wet trails and roadsides.

Some of the new flowers that have shown up since the middle of March are: chocolate lilies, buttercups, suncups, lupines, clovers, sweet peas, vetches, cudweeds, shooting stars, cutleaf geranium, tidy tips and footsteps of spring.

New Wild Flowers for March 15, 2011

As spring starts to take over from winter, more and more wildflowers are poking their heads up to enjoy the warmer weather.

These flowers include: blue-eyed grass, Bentham's lotus, bull mallow, trefoils, California everlasting, bur clover, thistles, chickweed, miner's lettuce, milkmaids, pineapple weed, and purple vetch to name a few.

More Wildflowers February 28, 2011

Despite snow and freezing temperatures, more local wildflowers are determined to bloom. Hopefully, the recent rain and the upcoming Wednesday's expected rain will only serve to encourage the oftentimes delicate appearing wildflowers to raise their heads and shine.

New ones include: sweet fennel, beach strawberry, Douglas Iris, silverweed to name a few.

Current Wildflowers for February 15, 2011

After some wonderfully warm and sunny days, local wildflowers started springing up a little earlier than last year.
Amongst those that can be seen are: Oxalis, California Poppy, Red-Stemmed Filaree, Wild Mustard, different colored Wild Radishes, Beach Primrose, Coastal Poppy, Sea Lavender, Hedge Nettle, Bindweed, Creeping Yellow Sorrel, Coastal Fiddleneck, Iceplants of different colors, Wild Strawberry, Fern Leaf Lomatium, Common Groundsel, Blue Dicks, Coastal Sanicle, Fumitory, Common Broom, Coastal Dandelion, Douglas Nighshade, Indian Paintbrush, Hillside Pea, California Buttercup, just to mention a few.

Wildflowers in and around Cambria

The dominant wildflowers that are currently adorning many a slope along the central coast of California are the brilliant yellows of Oxalis/Bermuda Buttercup and Wild Mustard.

My next post will showcase the other wild flowers, some of which started blooming towards the end of January, 2011.
